2011 saw some pretty hard times for the bulk of people in the UK. Youth unemployment rocketed, and the recession left many lives in tatters. The government has added to the trauma by leading cuts against the services most needed by the most vulnerable in our communities. It has made deals with rich corporations to allow them to skip paying taxes and paid lip service to attempts at controlling banking greed.
But there has been hope, in the guise of the occupy movement in the West and in parts of the Arab world where ordinary people are refusing to allow dictators to rule without impunity. In 2012, the churches must be asking themselves, ‘are we part of the movement of movements changing the world, or are we just watching it happen on the TV?’
Here at SoulSpace and JustSpace, we will continue to meet, worship, pray and act – trying to make sense of the Gospels, and live them out in our discipleship. We will support each other in our personal and political struggles, and forgive ourselves when we get it wrong. Come join us in 2012, 12 noon each Sunday at the German Church in the city centre, and 7.30pm Tuesday nights at Desmond Tutu House, 2 Ashgrove, opposite Bradford Uni. We are only as strong as those who join in with this struggle. We need you in 2012.
